Howdy all….
I was wondering if anyone could give me the max. span for 3×6 OAK fllor joists. I’m looking at a c1730 carrige house that someone wants to put a loft in. If you have a span table for oak timbers, that would be a great help.

Peter -
To help you, we need more info. Primarily, what the load you are designing for (sounds like a normal 2nd flr - 10 lbs/sf dead load and 40 lbs/sf live load), and what the spacing of the floor joist is or will be. I have span tables for oak beams but need that info to give you a rough estimate. Obviously it depends on what the condition of the beams is if they are existing. The tables I have are in Tedd Benson's book, "Building the Timber Frame House".

Nick-
Sorry for leaving out some details. My computer was behaving last night. Joists are 24"oc, condition is good. Load would be as you indicated.
Thanks for the help

According to my tables, the safe span for 50 lbs/sf uniform load would be about 10'6". I guess I ought to offer a disclaimer saying that I am not a P.E. or any type of engineer, just some guy with a book with span tables. Good luck with your project.
P.S. - this is for a deflection of 1/360th.

Nick-
Thanks for the quick help...despite you confirming my fears.
The room span is around 14ft. I guess I'll have to convince the owner that a beam, and post in the center of the room really wopuld look nice
thanks again
