Hello out there,
I’m on a mission for my husband…so hope someone can help….also hope I’m writing the lingo correctly.
We own a 100 yr old Denver Square that has 2′ by 8′ Douglas fir joists, 13 feet span.
The specs for the frig we’d like to buy say the floor has to be able to support 1200 pounds. Will these joists support this weight?
thanks for your help.

It doesn't sound liek anything I would worry about too much, but since this cannot be answered definitively, because there is no way to see from here all the various site factors. But on the surface, as presented, your floor should be able a live load around 35#/sq ft with no trouble. That includes people walking around to load that refer. Assuming it sits on a space 4' wide by 13' spanned, you have 1400# ( person and refer) sitting on 52 sq ft for a live load of about 27 # / sq ft. That is safe.
if the refer is only 3' wide, that same 1400# is divided by 39sq ft, for a live load of almost 36#/sq ft. That appraoches your maximum.
So the thing to do is to buy lettuce instead of beer - just kidding.
The thing to do is the check all the joists under the floor to see if they have any splits running through them, or termite or mold damage that has weakened them over the years. If any weakness shows up, it might be prudent to double one or two of them up, and add Simpsomns joist ahngers where they land, if butted to a beam rather than sitting atop the beam.
Doubts? If you have a digital camera, you can post attachments right here.
Design loads as I mentioned above do not mean that there will automatically be a catastrophic failure if you exceed the limnits. Wood is very forgiving and it just means that it will sag or bounce a little more than noraml, so you would notice that and be able to have time to get under there to jack it up and add structure to it, if it turns out you need to.
Remind him that after crawls down there with the spiders for yiou, that you will be able to cook up a better meal to set beside the beer after you have a new refer. With a nice garden salad!
