if you have a kitchen that is only 13 feet wide, in a U shape with a sink and dishwasher on one wall. there is not much room for drawers.

13' wide. How long is the other dimension? 13' x ___?
Need the other dimension, but, yeah u-shapes can be problematic if the legs of the "U" aren't long enough. Had one of those myself....
Need help?
Assuming the U runs down the X dimension, across the 13', and back up the X, you're actually too wide. ~30" counter + 8' aisle + ~30" counter. The aisle in a one-cook galley kitchen shouldn't be more than 4' wide. For two cooks, 5' max. The remaining space is wasted space. You're not gonna put a 12"-wide island in there; it would just be in the way.
OTOH, if your U runs down/up the 13' dimension and the bottom of the U is 9'-10' wide, you've got the makings of a good galley. Remember, in a galley layout, you don't have to design for drawers on opposing counters to be fully-open at the same time, as they almost never need to be.

So, your lady friend wants more drawers?

I just got done poking holes in a ladies drawers myself. She needed some pulls put on.
At one point while I was there something was said about getting in her drawers to which she said without missing a beat that it usually starts w/ margaritas.

Depending on how the person likes to cook you might have enough room to add a 3'x? island. Two feet off each wall leaves 9'....3' on each side of an island leaves 3' for the island. Cooks that actually cook often enjoy 3' isles. If multiple people cook at once then the island makes even more sense as it opens up more work stations.

Cabinets are 24" deep, drawers are less. Even if the were 24" with 13' that would leave 60" between them if they were all open. Just how big are you that 5 feet is a problem?
