This might be a stupid question,(getting pretty good at it)
but has anybody ever used a ladder stand-off
to hook a ridge? I have the kind that attach w/u-hook not the
quick conn./disconnect.
I need to replace some roof boots and the roof pitch is 12/12
I can’t get the ridge hooks(made for this) locally.
Or have you made some?

do NOT use a ladder standoff for this.
BUY the popper ridge hooks----they should be easily available at ANY roofing supply house
or you could order them online---maybe from ABC Supply
do NOT use the stand off for this

Hazlett, thanks, that was the kinda of reply I was looking for.
Stephen's answered already, but another option if you can't readily get a ridge hook, is to set two roof jacks near the eave and rest your ladder on them.

The roof jacks I haveand I hadn't thought of that, so that may be what I do. thanks for the idea.
On thing I've done that isn't difficult is to use piece of 2X10 and a 2X4 block. You screw the 2X4 crosswise on the 2X10 so it sort of forms a "T". Then you slide the 2X20 through the ladder until the 2X4 hits the rails. I found a pic of a setup like this that I used last summer. That's cousin Bubba on the bottom, and me on the right.
Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.
Some good old red neck enginering (-:That is what I like about this place. I knew someone would come along with an idea like thisWhat time you leaving for mississippi?
Definitely a "redneck" solution. The setup belonged to my Uncle. The roof is a 100 year old one room schoolhouse that he and my Mom attended when they were kids. I'm heading south at about 7am Sunday. I'll probably hit your area early afternoon. Email me or call if you're up for a visit over lunch or something.
Teamwork is essential - it allows you to blame someone else.
I'll probably hit your area early afternoon. Email me or call if you're up for a visit over lunch or somethingI didn't save your cell number but if you still got mine call me about an hour north of memphis(or tonight) and I love to buy your lunch.I'll meet you along your route so your not delayed. I think southhavenwould work for me and there is plenty of eatin places. Hwy 302(GoodmanRd.)It is I believe the 2nd exit once you get into miss.(don't knowthe exit number)But there is a Home depot and a big high rise hospital being built just before you get to the exit on the left hand side. It's only about 40 minutes away for me and would love to meet you.
These othre options work, but an S-hook bought and clamped on the ladder only costs about twelve bucks and can be moved with the ladder in two seconds instead of three or four minutes ofr each move.

Geencu------- that's an idea--- I have done it that way also---------------
but you have to be carefull----the ladder gets awfull tippy up towards the top---it can pivot that way at the bottom. with the ladder on jacks---the steeper the roof, the hairier it can be at the top
but with a hook ladder----the steeper the roof---the more secure the hook ladder is
just my opinion.
Stephen
We have excellent roof ladders in the fire service, with built in hooks. Probably a little heavy for construction.
HD sells ladder hooks (bought mine their). They are also available on line at Amazon/Tool Crib. Don't mess with substitutes to save a few bucks.
I checked at home depot and they didn't have emThanks anyway
