Has anyone got any good, bad, or indiferent things to say about Laticrete Hydro-ban. I had to rebuild my master shower after the quake last fall and am just about to use it to seal the new walls and floor into the drain. (yeah, I know I’m slow on my own place and the wife is getting anxious about not having a real bath in the bedroom!!!) A couple of friends said this was really good stuff, but I’m just not sure about a paint on coating.

I don't know what laticrete is, but I ended up using RedGard on our shower surround.
All the research I did made me feal better about using that than a plastic vapor barrier. It also went on fairly easily.
Laticrete is the brand name and Hydro-Ban is just one of many products they have for concrete, tile etc. This takes the place of a vinyl, pvc, or rubber pan. What I like is that I have built a shelf the length of the shower that is 32" high and this will coat that in a continous film all the way to the drain. Over here no one suggested Red Guard or they just don't carry it. Mahalo for the response.Never fear the want of business. A man who qualifies himself well for his calling, never fails of employment.

Hydroban is a new product and as far as I know the only liquid membrane that the manufacturer allows to be used without fabric at changes of plane. Yes it works fine when you follow the manufacturer's recommendations. So do all the other liquid membranes on the market.
You do need to understand and follow the recommended details of the pan and drain areas.
You can find RedGard at the local Home Depot. Been doing a lot of earthquake damage repair on tiled tub surrounds. Here's how we do the fix. After removing the old tile and green board, we treat for any mold, put up 15 lb. felt for a moisture barrier, then 1/2" Hardibacker. Seal all the joints with polyurethane sealant, fiberglass tape all joints, then two coats of RedGard. The tile over everything.Don't forget to use caulk instead of grout at all transition joints and at the corners.
