Hello to all,
My wife noticed a lighting fixture on our ceiling in the hallway that has been making a “ticking sound” when it is in use which is not often. I removed the fixture turned on the light and didn’t hear anything. I reattached the fixture turned it on and again didn’t hear it.
Anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing it?
Thanks in advance, turtleboy

Neighbors had a ticking sound coming from a couple of can lights. They'd tick for a few minutes, always after beging turned on.
I figured it was a noise from friction caused by thermal expansion.
Checked out the cans, the bulbs were higher wattage than recommended. I replaced the bulbs and reset the cans.
No more ticking.
most cieling light fixtures are not rated for more than sixty watts.
They have a little lable inside or on the socket that youhave to ignore to screw in a larger bulb. Most people do just that and cause themselves problems with the fixture.

That is why I like compact fluorescents. 26W is equivalent to around 100W incandescent.
You find one that's CF and 60watts, and you'd really have some light!

The good news is that CF's create less heat. The bad news is that some of them are very much more vulnerable to heat damage, and require a much lower temperature to keep working. In particular, I've had some CF reflector floods that didn't last as long as incandescents because they cooked the complex electronics in the base. Read the fine print on the packages.

He didn't say "in" the ceiling, he said "on."
Then he said he removed the fixture and turned it on, and no tick.
I don't think he is talking about a recessed can.
But as brother Smith says, "hey, what do I know?"
In or on, they all have max wattages.I understood his removed comment to refer to the fixture cover itself, because iof he removed the fixture, there would be nothing there to turn on but bare wires, and that could surely majke a big tic sound!

Hello again to all and thanks for the advice. Here is what I've found to this point.
So far no more ticks. The 3 (G16 1/2) bulbs are rated at 25w for a total of 75w, which is what the max wattage of the fixture is rated.
Just thought I'd mention what the status is.
