Ever heard of one failing? I need to make one for me and some hired help.
I think Boss mentioned a preference a few weeks ago… 2X4 stock, half lap joints, screwed and glued. I’m thinking plywood gussets on the ears wouldn’t be a bad idea. Obviously, the angle will match the roof pitch. Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
Scott.

You can buy a ladder/ridge hook that clamps onto a regular ladder for a chicken ladder.
I have one AL with wool carpet pad glued to it to protect metal and acrylic roof surfaces.
Another where the plywood gussets ARE the ears over the ridge. They do catch a lot of wind on a breezy day when moving it around though. and that shortened the length of the actual ladder withg so much above the roof ridge.
For a permanent roof chicken ladder, i would use clear VG fir and let the rungs into the rails with glue and screws like you mention. Wood gets heavy for moving it around on the roof.
But if it is to be committed to only roof chicken ladder, the rails don'
t need much strength so 2x3 would be plenty

I have a way of thinking of practically worshipping any piece of equipment that my life depends on.
So guys that throw stuff like that around get the boot. Most failures on this stuff is from careless attitudes building or handling it. Each time you set up, you inspect it. When you build it you think of all that can go wrong and build to beat the possibility of injury out and down

Agreed. That's why I asked. Thanks,Scott, "The Careful Chicken"Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.”
I've cobbled up stuff for just ME, but if you have a helper, do everyone a favor and buy a "ridge hook" from ABC Supply. It clamps to an AL ladder and even has a wheel to roll it up and then the flip it over.
Just use the fly section of an old ( often out of service from beig bent) al extension ladder.

Yeah, thanks to you and Piffin, I'm going to do just that. Home Creapo sells one here, so I'll give it a look. Besides, if I go that route, I don't have another big, clunky piece of "art" cluttering up my yard.Scott.Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.”
artI gotta remember that word next time the wife wants it cleaned up.
