I’m about ready to finish the inside of a new garage/shop. It has 10′ ceiling, 2X4 construction on 16″ centers. I’m considering using 7/16″ OSB and paSOBing it white, does anyone have experience using this or something similar? Is there a better material (not to much more expensive?) It seems like it would be more forgiving to bumps, etc. and less expensive to install (overall) than sheet rock? What are the better ways to install it? Lay the 4X8′ sheets horizontally and stagger the vertical seems and then put a batten (right word?) along the seams?
Thanks for any help and experience,
Tom Norris

I've seen some garage walls done entirely in peg board - just an idea... Or why not just go with the retro look of some paneling?
BTW - what's "paSOBing"?
*Don't see any need for the batten. Pole buildings often use the same sheet metal inside that they use outside. I can get the stuff 3' wide for $1.81 per foot and it goes up fast. It will dent and scratch but so will your painted osb. One real advantage is the white will reflect alot of light. Makes the shop easier to work in.
*I would use OSB as a wainscot and drywall above and on the ceilings. A classy touch - use OSB based exterior siding, the stuff that looks like T1-11. It is more durable than regular OSB. Cut the sheets in half (4'x4'). The material has a lap joint so there is no need for a batten. If you are going to run your wiring in the walls make sure you have lots of outlets in place before you close up.

Thanks for the ideas! I'm wiring now, so I still have some time to cosider all these alternatives.

I recently visited the polebarn/studio of an "artist" (can't help the quotations on that--you should see what sells these days). Anyhow, he had used OSB, primed it lightly, then skimcoated the whole thing with topping compound. It was somewhat wavy, but with a light brown (sorry, don't know the real color, probably something like "New Autumn Heather" or such), it looked sharp. Might try that in my own place...
