Metal shingles

cu | Posted in Photo Gallery on May 20, 2009 01:56am

Been working on these for a while:

Fake cedar shingles made from copper and diamond shingles – these are made from some scrap kynar coated terne.

Got a customer interested in one or the other – thought I’d trot them out.

I like the copper shingles a lot .

I'd like the diamonds more if they were more traditional , but thats just me .

How much cabbage would a sq. of those copper jewels be ??

Awesome looking, as usual. And I wouldn't call them 'fake' anything. They don't have to imitate something else to be real in their own right....

Okay, now I've screwed up my courage and I'm gonna ask a really dumb question, and I give you permission in advance to laff at me.

I don't see any gutter-lap on the sides of those shingles. What keeps the rain from runnin' down between 'em? I assume these aren't meant to be just decorative. Am I not seeing something?

They're just laying on my shop table. There'd be a starter course under the 1st course. They've got the same lap/headlap as slate, but not as much headlap as cedar shingles.

I'm partial to the copper ones. I think they'd be really cool as sidewall shingles, too.

Did you wrap something with the copper, or are they more like box tops and hollow underneath?

      >>>>>>>>>>Did you wrap something with the copper, or are they more like box tops and hollow underneath?
They're hollow, but only about 1/4" thick tapering to nothing at the top. They're pretty strong - I wouldn't hesitate to walk on them and I'm down to 240 lbs.

    Are any in use?

I like em. They look like they'd be an easy install.

I'll be up to get the finishing stuff I need in the AM. on my way by. Did we forget I need shingles too? Maybe 2 bundles. Of the sample I left.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I tried to get Luka to shingle his main shelter with license plates one time, years ago. I figured we could all mail him our old tags, from all over the country. So I invented this look, thank you very much !Greg

Someone else already came up with that as siding:

I assume the copper ones would be face nailed through the top part, but how would you fix the diamonds to the sheathing? (I could look all throughh the turret thread for an answer, but hoping you'll have mercy.)

CU,  They look great.  If there is to be a significant reveal, perhaps each copper shingle should have a clip on each side (about halfway up) to secure the bottom edge of the shingles in the course above.

    Grant ,

Thought any more about what it would cost the customer to have these made up  ??
