Here in Madison, WI, I have a roughly 5 foot square front window (about 35 panes) and a storm window (about 6 panes) that I’ve reglazed and repainted. I’m feeling good about the work we’ve done. However, the reason we did the work is that there was lots of mildew b/t window and storm.
So, I prevent this–how? I’ve already glazed and painted, so we need–more ventilation? Less ventilation? It’s a pretty shady area. 20 feet away, on the vertical stucco next to the garage door, there’s a fair amount of green. Do I drill several 1/4″ weep holes along the bottom? Caulk in the top? Caulk all around? Place the storm in a bed of caulk? I know storms aren’t seen as a big thermal barrier, but since this is an older window it’s got to function to some extent in that capacity–the more the better. So, I’d just as soon avoid multiple vent holes if I can.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
