Moving to AZ.

| Posted in Help/Work Wanted on March 4, 2005 03:59am

This is the last job I’ll be doing in North East Ohio, should be done 3-5. The wife and I put our house up for sale 6-27-04, the new buyers want to be in 3-25. We’re pretty excited about moving out to Chandler Arizona area and starting a new work relationship with the homeowners there. I was wondering if there are any breaktimers that live in the Pheonix area. I’m going to hang a shingle out front of the Sierra Madre (where we’ll be staying) for a couple months until we buy some land. It would be nice to meet some of the other contractors to talk with and see if I could pick up some hours here and there until I get somewhat settled in, then I can put more of a commitment into scouting out work from homeowners around the area.

Are you going to build and rent out a guest suite?

I apparently live near you.  It is 14 degrees here and I am tired of it.

    1. GB2 | Mar 04, 2005 05:38am | #2

I live in North Kingsville, and it is 16 degs. right now, so you must be close, within 60 miles anyhow. I'm not sure if I'm going to build another one or not. I think I'll wait till we get there and see what happens. I bid on property using the fsbo site, it had just went on the net within 3 days, the guy writes back and said it was pending and wondered if he could have my info in case it didn't go thru, I said sure. That was a 2.5 acre 3 bed 2 bath place outside of Mesa. Houses go quick out there.

My nephew, (my brothers boy) is going with us, He can't wait !! I've found 2 others hiding in the suitcases already packed and ready to go!! I can't wait to get there myself....I even uncovered the motorcycle just to look at it.  :>)

        Uncovering the motorcycle...

You know GB, that is a criminal thing to say to us poor frozen northern folk.

In all, hope the best to ya. Make sure you stay plugged in around here.

be just in case you get swamped with work in AZ and are looking to draft help:o)

When I woke up this morning @ 6:20, I looked out the bedroom window, couldn't see anything, it was frosted over, every window I went to. Looked at the ole thermostat, it read 4 degs. I thought, this is ridiculous, Ice covered everything Total white, but there is something to be said for it, Beautiful. Then reality set in, in an hour, I'll be outside with my tablesaw ripping cedar for wainscot.......Yeah.

            GB-

Have you looked into the licensing requirements in AZ?  Plan on spending around 3-5 months just to get licensed and able to legally "work for the homeowners".

In case you aren't aware, AZ's licensing requirements are second only to California in stringency and level of red tape.  You'll need insurance, a bond, extensive background check, paperwork, experience verifications, etc.

Just and FYI in case you didn't know.

            Bob

          2. GB2 | Mar 05, 2005 05:35am | #8

Bob, Thanks for the information on the license. I'm waiting for a response from the Capitol Service Government Agency for an application to get an application for the pre-test test, to see if I qualify for the application for license..Sounds long and drawn out but I figure we are going to set back for a month or so when we arrive in AZ. I had talked to an A.D.O.T. concrete guy for Skidmore and Shaw road construction (I don't know if the spellings right), as long as I work for a license contractor (builder) I could get work.. I haven't talked to anyone official about this, but it sounds right.

If you want, I'll let you now what the Capitol Service guys (or gals) have to say when I hear from them.

Did you build that house on the 'Bob's new home' thread ?? That's sharp.

            GB

          3. BobKovacs | Mar 05, 2005 04:18pm | #9

Nope- the "Bob's new house" thread is another Bob.

I just spent time looking into Arizona, since I almost relocated there last Spring.  Check out the Ahwatukee Foothills area if you get a chance- near Chandler, beautiful scenery, and the best rated school district in the valley (Kyrene District) if that matters.

            Bob

          4. GB2 | Mar 05, 2005 07:40pm | #10

I just checked out some houses in Ahwatukee from your suggestion, and you're right, that is a beautiful area. When we get settled in (after a few days) I'll get the scooter out and the wife and I will go house hunting. I figure it'll take a few weeks to find something we both like. (I'm thinking of building one, we'll see). The thing I dislike about house search on the net is the lack of pictures..  Got to see them close up.

My brothers' son is going with us, he wants to relocate also. This will give him a chance to see what's out there. He wants to continue working with me on different projects. He's mainly a ceramic guy, anything that can be done with ceramic is his thing. I told him he wont need me out there, everything is ceramic, you just need to find the pricing guide........

What kept you from the re-location ?

            Hi Bob,

Just got the info back from AZ. State Capitol. It looks like 45 to 60 days of wait time with a cost of @ $2100. This includes a two day seminar type class @ $1245., test & fees @ $75. and $800. for the license.

Thought you might want to know.
