Is anyone aware of a book, magazine acticle(s) on useing multiple pieces of moulding to build fireplace mantles and surrounds, 4 and 5 piece crown, etc. I seen it done, but being a little slow gifted, I can never seen to figure out what type of moulding or trim to use.

I've read Craig Savage's Trim Carpentry Techniques. It has some decent advice, as well as diagrams/drawings on built-up crown. I don't recall him addressing fireplace surrounds. It was good for info tips on fitting and installation. About $18 USD through Amazon.
*FHB #93,pp 66-69, has an article on just that topic, written by Gary Katz. You can get a copy by calling 800 477 8727. Have fun building your mantle, they were always one of my favorite jobs.Andy
*Is that a copy of the article or of the entire mag?
*You can probably get either, I don't think that's an issue we're out of.
*I have and like Savage's book too, though i don't think it would be of much help here. The fancier local lumberyards have suggested built-up moldings displayed and cataloged; one also has a fairly simple brochure on mantel design. Nothing, I'm sure compared to an exhaustive FHB treatment. :) (so when the heck is there going to be a CD-ROM???)Post a picture of your results! I'd like to know, how do you get your first mantle job like this? Do you let on how, um, inexperienced you are. If i did, I'd say hey this is a good price and I will get it right even if it takes a bit longer, counting it as part of my education.
*Murray,Go to the web sites of http://www.barnesand noble.com and amazon.com and type in "fireplace mantles" in the search engine. There are lots of books available on this subject
