I had a musty smell from my car air conditioner and my mechanic said to turn it to outside air and spray Lysol into the vent, then shut off the air conditioner and let it sit for a while. It worked like a charm! You probably will not have to shut down the stairwell for it to work, however!! Good luck.
*You need to air out the space. Sounds like it is enclosed, so you'll have to cut in a hole. Maybe you could put in a permenant air vent.
*Robert,It seems to me that if you're getting a musty smell from under the stairs that there is some air from under the house getting into that cavity. Under-house air "always" smells musty. Find the holes and fill them up. Expandable foam insulation in the can works great for filling holes. If this doesn't work.......call back.Ed. Williams
*Rich is right - the area needs venting. Have an understair storage area that smelled musty for years - tried charcoal, even left the door cracked - ended up installing a vent in the door and a vent in the wall to allow air to pass through - that took care of the problem - didn't have any water entering the area - just musty from no air movement.Good luck, Jared
*Hmmm. one person says seal it up, two people say vent it. Where's Fred L? The first thing I would do is to try to find the source and proceed from there.
*reinhard,It could be that the trapped air in the closet is the problem. I didn't consider that. If that's the case, then venting should solve the problem.Good point,Ed. Williams
