Nail heads vs. fiber cement siding
How do you guys detail the nail heads on fiber cement trim? The nail heads are hidden on the actual siding, but the hardiplank trim is face-nailed with stainless 8d box nails. Is it customary to countersink and putty all the heads, or do you just pound them flush and paint over them?

I shoot clipped heads a bit deep and putty them. I hate nail heads showing, stainless or otherwise.
PeteVa -- for what it's worth -- you are not supposed to use clipped heads -- I have and have not had a problem -- they must want the whole head as holding power -- if the clipped head is set square, I don't think you will have a difficulty -- my oldest job is 9+ yrs old - Dudley

Why not follow there installation guide?Joe Carola
I'm not arguing with the written instructions. I just know that the few times I've had to remove a piece that needed replacement for size or whatever the 5/4 Harditrim broke before any nails pulled thru or out of the sturcture. If over time the trim degrades then I guess I'll have a problem to address. It's my hope that it does't.
James Hardie installation instructions require the nails to be snug against the siding or the trim. If the nail head penetrates the surface - Hardie requires that the nail head be caulked and an additional nail installed snug to the surface.

if you set and putty them, you are going to be in warranty hell with the manufacturers.
yes, you can see the heads with fibrecement unless you blind nail.

How do you blind nail trim?Joe Carola
woops,
blind nail the siding not the trim
sorry about that.
i would consider setting the nails on my own home, but not on a customer's home where the specs must be followed for warranty concerns.
