Does anyone have any suggestions on the best prservative to use on exterior cedar? I used Flood CWF-UV Clear (oil based, but cleans up with water) to dip my siding prior to installation 2 years ago. I’m going for a natural finish. Cleaned and recoated the siding each summer, but the preservative does’nt seem to last more than a few months. Siding turns gray near the base of the house from precipitation. Is there a better oil based product out there (maybe linseed oil?) I know, I know I should have allowed the cedar to weather for a year first. Also, whats the best product to clean/prep weathered cedar, I used two types- The one recommended for cedar stained the wood green, so I switched to Wolman deck cleaner in the powder form. Appreciate any input.

You might try using Cabot's Bleaching Oil. On white cedar it will create a beige weathered look. Check it out at http://www.cabotstain.com/top_htm/bleach.htm

Gordon, it actually goes more of a silver-grey. A weathered "Nantucket" look, like the cottages on that sun and salt swept isle.
*Ten years ago I used Penofin on redwood siding. It needed recoating every two years at first; now every three years. This time around I'm using, Super Deck, a similar product but much cheaper, and it seems to have a heavier body. Good luck.
*Superdeck is being pushed at a lumberyard here -- is this your first experience with the stuff? Good recommendations?
