My Thunderbird crashed badly – really badly. I even went to whoever they have that helps you fix things for $39.95 per incident, w/ only partial success.
Inbox got too big because I never compacted it – didn’t know I had to – Went through 4 sessions on phone w/ helpers. Everything compacted now, but strange things are happening.
Anyone out there in FHB land who can help?

Ouch! How big ius too big? I have about 1200 messages in mine cuase I don't trash them all and don't make all the separate folders I ought to. Didn't know that it had a limit before choking.

Pif: I had 3500 msgs in Inbox - BUT - I had at least 30,000 that I had deleted. What I learned is that when you delete, they don't really delete. they are just rendered invisible so that Thunderbird doesn't have to reconstitute & reorganize the file after every delete. My total file size for all folders, containing another 3500 msgs (approx) was 3.04 GB. No, I didn't stutter when typing. If it crashes before you compact, it is not a pretty sight. I may never recover. I actually only lost 15 msgs in the debacle, but they were the most recent 15, including a series of exchanges w/ a fellow VN vet who flew w/ the guy who just last week rec'd the Medal of Honor for his exploits in 1965.Go to Thunderbird help & search for FAQ on compacting. Then go do it! Other clients, like Outlook Express automatically compact periodically; for some whacko reason, TB doesn't.DonDon Reinhard

OK, done.delete moves an email to the trash folder, in which i had almost 20,000 messages.I was wondering about the possibility of re-installing Thunderbird in a slightly different location as Thunderbird B, then using it to import the messages from A and see iof those lost ones show up that way.I know a lost abook can be found like that sometimes.

Pif: I am barely computer literate! Tjose 20,000 msgs in the trash folder, even after you clean it out, are apparently still eating up space till you compact everything..Don't know about the other issue, reinstaling TB in a close by location.DonDon Reinhard
