does anyone know of a carpenter in the chicagoland area who would build a custom armoire/linen press, without charging a small fortune?

That's a vague price stipulation for custom work.
Recommend: edit or state your budget.
Good luck.
That's also a vague description of the work. How big, what style, how elaborate, made of what materials?
Recommend you post some description, sketch or picture of similar item.

I will do it. Send whatever drawings you like.
I will not charge you a small fortune. ;-)

If you want real wood, good construction and a nice piece - post in knots, but it WILL cost. If you want plywood and trim or pressboard, go to walmart or look up an unfinished furniture store. Remember - you get what you pay for.
Check out the entertainment center I did several years ago.

If you're interested, let me know your budget, size, woods, etc and I'll see if I'm interested. Lead time, too.
Sketches, drawings, pictures of what you want would be helpful.
Thanks.
