Listeners write in about haunted pipes and building-science tomes, and they ask questions about roof venting and roof leaks.

You guys didn't know that this place was just a cover for a bunch of academic psychologists, did you. They use this stuff in thier classes all the time. The only people who are paranoid are the ones trying to tell us that those voices are all in our heads...

I think they said, why don't you come in and we'll talk about it? If the voice were Clarence Darrow or Atticus Finch (my favorite lawyer character), I might listen.
No, I just said hello to BF, a pleasant elderly gentleman looking around amongst the pigeon cages and bags of Purina Pigeon Chow ... a minute later a friend said, do you know who that is?!?

I was just reading through some of the old posts, and thought, "What a
b fantastic
book some of these posts would make!" I even came up with a few chapter headings! It would allow the public to see contractors, carpenters, and all the other tradespeople on this board, in a whole new light - a good light, of course!
Who would publish it? Does Taunton own all the rights to the posts? Or are they in the public domain? Would you have to get releases from all the posters? (I did photos for a book, and getting releases was the hardest part!) Or could you just use anonymous "names" and have a disclaimer at the beginning of the book? Andrew, you probably all ready know all this stuff.
Seriously, what do ya'll think?
Patty
*Patty,as I recall part of the agreement on sign in is Taunton gets the copyright. hope you are all pleased to be contributing to their book prospects.
*Yep, there was something about all submissions becoming property of Taunton that I recall reading -- where it is now I don't know, though it shouldn't be something you have to search for. Maybe it's just in the new user setup IF I WERE TAUNTON'S COUNSEL A LINK TO THE T&C WOULD BE ON EVERY PAGE. (hint, hint) no charge for this one :)Your release is implicit when you press the "post" button. A pretty standard term for this sort of thing. So, interesting questions arise: if we submit photos or drawings, especially if we upload them to their server, do they have the copyright? If we store or print or e-mail comments here, do we need Taunton's permission? If the commentary is Taunton's property, are they liable for slander or defamation contained therein (lots of that here!). Etc. I skipped copyright & trademark law in school, and had an uneasy relationship with all clauses of teh First Amendment... But i know the Internet is going to shake up many hoary areas of law ... follow the indecency/free speech stuff closely, it is quite important ...Be careful not to print anything you consider proprietary; besides Taunton, any reader could go and patent it... Instead send it to me, and I'll ... look after it.And fiyo, tsk tsk, a BOOK? Methinks you miss the point, books are history. In a fast-changing field like construction, the material should be accessible and searchable online. What is needed is a patient editor to edit and organize it, plus, of course, some way to extract profit from it. (I'm a humanitarian, not a fool.)
*Andrew, thanks for the info! I remember my ex taking a course on internet law, way before anyone thought it made any sense.Oh, yes, I am indeed a "fool" - much more fun! ; ) The book I had in mind is not about construction; it is about thei people.Remember Wendy, the woman who started a topic on children's play spaces, etc? She is writing a book on the subject, and, viai this board,is asking not only for ideas, but for photos and drawings.i Tauntonis publishing the book, and I wonder if they suggested this? Just a thought, that definitely goes to the legal question.Patty
*Ah! -I- missed the point. I know Taunton will realize more and more that they should mine this space for info. Now, I think some will be slower to give free advice to commercial interests than to their peers. Then you really are giving something for nothing.I can see a book about the people here -- in the self-help section?
*abnormal psychRich Beckman:-)
*I can see it now..._Personality Disorders Among the Building Trades_with chapter headings such as:"Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Plagues Fine Woodworkers""Framer Fantasies and Other Aberrations""Size Matters - The Big Tool Complex"The cover blurb would be, of course,i DSM IV to add new categories for the trades!Look out, Dr. Ruth!
*DSM IV? Well, la-di-dah! Sounds like you have a more than passsing acquaintance. PDR?
*JeeezAnd I used to complain that Bill Connor was bad with acronyms. . . sorry Bill, yer a rank amateur compared to these dweebies ( I could always figure out what you were talkin about anyway except for NEB/JLC)
*Journal of Light Const. -- formerly New England Builder (?)ah-ha, Taunton's rules are in "content policy" At least, its ideas as to what it wants the rules to be.
*AndrewGet with the times boy, are you a newbie here???. . .. Bill answered that a year ago. . .I even go over to their board once in a while. . . and you think Knots is i boring???now what about i yourarcane-isms?
*Actually I was certain of it (not having read Bill's post, too). The NEB is superfluous -- I guess just to show you're an old-timer?Haven't inflicted Knots on myself in a long while. Woodworkers are ... different ... and i get offended when anyone calls me one. Sure, woodworking comes up now and then, but I'm not one of those precision nuts who can't do anything without first making a jig...
*Nope. . . it was to show thati hewas an old timer. . . I hadn't heard of either one.Jigs are good. . . reels are better, especially with old celluloid attachedNow what about this DSM 1V/PDR jive???
*Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders. 4th edition. Actually I think they're using the 4R now. (R for revised)
*JonThanx. And PDR?. . . i Probably Dumb Ripoff???
*Patrick M.Close. Physician's Desk Reference. Covers all the prescription drugs on the market complete with pictures. Very handy when you want to id those pills the plumber dropped on the deck, before he comes back tomarrow with the sawzall.
*JonProbably placebo's . . .just ta keep ya guessin. . . they can be sneaky those plumbers, reduce yer framing to toothpicks and never bat an eye!!
*Maybe it's their revenge for all the abuse carpenters give them? Vicious cycle.
*PattyLOL! How about _Compulsive Tool Buying as Compensatory Therapy_ and _Wood Separation Trauma - When They Just Can't Let Go_Made my Friday...Lisa
*i Thank you, Lisa!I guess one person is still talking about the BOOK, lol!Andrew, thei onlyreason I know about the DSM IV is 'cause I typed most of my daughter's papers when she was in grad school - isn't it obvious that I do not need therapy, nor the medication "they" keep insisting I take? ; )Jon, I think you're right, they are revising the DSM. BTW, how doi youknow about all this? ; )I've been thinking about asking Wendy if and how she got permission to use the posts for her book on children's spaces...Patty
*...reading over this particular subject, and the ensuing posts, has convinced me eveni morethat there's a book begging to be done on the, uh, personalites of all the tradespeople... ; )
*Listen to the voices Patty, they know what's right.Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean everyone's not out to get you. ;)
*Yeah, but they deserve it, and more!!
*PattyJust between you and me, I didn't like the sound of her post and decided not to contribute to her "book". You'll have to trust me when I say I think could have given her some useful stuff. Met a guy I went to school with a few years back who had carved out a career i writing(?)self help and DIY books and the like. Didn't know sweat abouti anything, did minimal research, mined other books and publications, and exhibited his one real talent in putting it all together for the gullible and/or wannabee types at Rodale etc.Aquainted me quickly with the i public domainconcept!!!
*Andrew, the voices always know what's right, don't they? I mean, what do all those shrinks know, anyway?
*Patty,Spent most of my adult life in the mental field. 12 yrs as a Behavioral Therapist in the criminal treatment programs (Axis II Are Us), The last 6 with County Mental Health doing community outreach stuff.Loved it while I was doing it even though it didnt pay diddly, I just dont want to do it anymore.JonC
*Oh sure, those voices always start out friendly but just wait. If people really are out to get you, you're not paranoid.JonC
*Behavioral Therapists for the various 'paths? What, so you give them a shock every time they hit someone? :) I met Skinner shortly before he dided, even met some of his famed pigeons (they live a long time!).
*... at the legal ethics course i had to take a Saturday or two ago (DC Bar req.), one fellow said that an attorney called their outreach line in the middle of a trial to tell them that he was hearing the voices of various famous legal scholars telling him what strategy to take. His question was, could he disagree with them?Funnier if it were not true. Hope he tolerated Thorazine (or whatever dreadful drug) OK.
*Patrick, funny, I got the same feeling about Wendy's posts... that's why I said maybe she could get someonei elseto do a sketch of my idea. Wonder if Tauntoni isher publisher? (I think I may be obsessed with this...)Jon, well, you were right in the middle of it! My daughter deals a lot with the criminal justice system (though she never planned to), and loves her work - but I can see her burning out. She's getting ready to take her boards and eventually go into private practice. I think she's had enough of girls coming at her with broken bottles and people trying to set her hair afire! The funny thing is, she's one of those sweet, angelic-looking women, and her employers are always worried at first; but, then, they never saw her and her sisters fight when they were growing up, lol!Andrew, did you and Mr. Skinner have a conversation? Now, personally, I would be proud to have as a "claim to fame" that I met Skinner's pigeons. Yes, I'm serious. BTW, I loved your story about the lawyer who called the outreach line - and, yes, I definitely believe it! But - you never said if they told him whether or not he could disagree...(hell, no, I'm not signing this)
