   I was somewhat surprised with how quiet my PC 347 is when I first used it. If cutting outdoors I sometimes don't use ear protection, and I'm sound-sensitive.

   I can't remember any model being touted as quiet except the Makita 5277B 7 1/4" Hypoid (worm drive) saw. It claims 87dB. I don't know how that compares with other saws, or how they made the measurement.

   From a basic physics standpoint, I would think that smaller and lower power saws would be more quiet. I wouldn't take this to an extreme and get one of those toy (IMHO) cordless saws, but you might think about the PC 345 6" Saw Boss. Small saw, but still able to cut a 2x4 at 45 degree bevel.

   *John A.: Be a man about this, be proud. The sound of a circular saw is very distinctive and it announces to the whole neighborhood that you are doing manly things. Also productive things, not just being inside surfing the net.

   *John, good point from lonecat! Maybe you should get a loud saw and run it from a cheap coleman generator. ;-) Does it bother you when people mow their lawns or blow leaves? Probably not unless they do it darn early or at night. Is that why some riding mowers have lights? Anyway, you might take a cue from the mowers and use the saw when folks are likely to be awake anyway. I would be surprised if you got any complaints unless they are close enough to hear you snore. You'll spent a lot less time with the saw on than they do mowing unless you're building your house. BTW, the more power tool noise you make the more likely your neighbors will be over asking to borrow tools, but that's another topic. As another aside, quiet saws are handy when breaking into houses. I would guess the new Milwaukee 18v Sawzall to be a favorite of burglars. Take Care, Dave

   *Dear John A, Please don't bring down all of the John A's. I measure how much noise I can make and when, by what the neighbors do. Example: I listened to an 80's GM van in need of a tune up and carburator rebuild, warm up for 15 minutes everyday last winter, that intitles me to sawcuts throughout summer as early as 9 and as late as 9:30. I snowblow my other neighbor's drive to sweeten her just in case she cops a tude. If you live in that perfect neighborhood, go to the lumberyard first thing or move materials around but, their day will come when they owe you some noise time.Remember to be proud as a John A and of your carpentry, noise and all Good Luck John Austin

   *A MUCH better noise than any lawn equipment! At least it is brief. Or my favorite, the Jaguar next door that won't start, so the owner cranks it for thirty minutes. (Apparently Jag starters are more powerful than a Geo Metro.)Dave, the high-freq. noise of the saw travels line-of-sight; standing behind a building or sheet of plywood would probably attentuate it quite a bit.

   Is there a particular model or brand that runs quieter than the others? I am a weekend DIY and I think it wakes up everyone in my neighborhood.
