A way I use is to draw a circle, bisect it with a horizontal and vertical line so as to create 90 degree quadrants. Bisect each quadrant at 45 degrees. Connect the points at the arc, and you have an octagon.

It does a lot of the math for you, much easier than grabbing the framing square.
