There is no sign of moisture damage in my attic, I am far more concerned with getting the maximum insulation efficiency in our cold climate (Ontario). My question is, is there an effective way to reduce air flow through my ceiling that is not onerous to do. The ceiling is 1/2 of plaster over 24″ x 48″ gypsum boards. This is nailed to 1 1/2 of fibre board. the joist spaces are filled with really nasty old black insulation with pretty decayed looking kraft paper backing. I have already lugged up a layer of R-19 fibreglass and intend to put down another layer, but after reading many of the threads in this list, I would like to know if addressing air movement first is important. I guess the main idea are things like electrical boxes for the light fixtures, the access hatch, and the interior wall spaces. What are the issues involved with sealing these sources? Can I just use a little low-expanding foam in these areas, or does this compromise the safety of my electrical system?
Sorry for the long winded question.
