An upholstery friend of mine asked about using OSB for hidden components such as cornices and headboard panels. These would be covered with padding and fabric. He asked about the objectionable smell and how long it might last. I did not have a good answer for him other than to buy it ahead and let it air out for a while. Particularly for a headboard, he did not want a customer to complain about outgassing.
Any idea on how long this needs to air out? (he was talking about using 1/2″ and 3/4″)

The plywood industry seems to have gone to low or no-VOC glues for all the OSB type products made in the USA and Canada. Particle board is still hard to get in a Low-VOC version and cabinet plywood from China and the orient (and some bamboo products) are still made with the bad adhesives. You shouldn't have any problem with out-gassing from North American OSB.

byhammerandhand,
OSB made in the US within the last 5 years pretty much has had to conform to minimal VOC requirements..
MY osb used on my SIP's is completely free of oder.
I've never noticed any odor from OSB

I bought two bunks of OSB a year ago and stored most of it in my garage. Somehow got the wife to agree to store the overflow of about 20 sheets in our dining room. Without airflow the stuff will stink even after a year. Makes your eyes water.
Best bet is to sticker what you will be using for as long as possible to allow outgassing to occur. Then warn the customer that man made products are used in the finished product and fresh cuts to fit the components will cause more outgassing and they can expect to detect a whiff now and again.
I wonder if an application of Odor Ban would work.

Must be a great difference in OSB and what facility it comes from!
