Reading the various posts provides a reinforcement that there are no constants in the world. Have you looked at how John Q. Public sees the construction industry and how they react to it? Who do they see: TOH, Hometime, Bob Villa and a number of other shows on HGTV, PBS, TLC etc.
Two recent posts here, one says the customer wants to negotiate the price, stay away from that guy. Another say, hey, I added 12% for the heck of it and got the job, maybe I should try 24% next time. Recent article in JLC talks about qualifing customers and one of the questions asked is how did you come up with your budget. How do you think John Q comes up with their budget?
My view, I have this much to spend and how can I make the most of it, take all the ideas from TOH, Hometime, Bob Villa etc and apply them. Spend a lot of time talking to companies, getting bids, and trying to compare apples to oranges to find out if you can get what you want for what dollars you have to spend.

I would do the same bobl. There's no harm in trying to get the most for your money.
The highest price isn't always the worst value, and the best price rarely is. In the service arena that we work in, there are a lot of variables.
If you can pick their brains, more power to you.

Constants are for the guys fixin' our trucks.I think JQ's opinion is divided like this; 33% crooked bums, 33% lost, trapped youth, grown old, 33% skilled craftsmen, 1% masters.I've been labeled all of the above in the same week. Perspective is impossible. People carry too many bags.JQ goes to the bank, hands over his life history and lets the underwriters decide what his budget is. *bobl,Here's what I have to say to JQ.......When building, find your budget number and cut it in half. Spend that amount. That way you will have enough money left to finish the job with all the little personal extras that pop up during construction.Ed. Williams
