Painting prep with old texture & new DW
I am in the process of helping my son and DIL “clean up” their new house which was previously a foreclosure and is in fairly rough shape. I’d like to ask for recommendations on how we should prepare for painting the interior walls.
On the existing walls there is a medium knock down painted texture (on the good sections) … there is also new DW where we have had to patch numerous holes as well as some smaller areas where we used mesh and aluminum prepackaged patch kits now covered with DW multipurpose compound. And needless to say, a lot of ordinary dirt on many sections.
Our current prep plan is:
1) Fix holes and patch, scrape away texture close to patch boundaries so we can finish with a smooth seam … 12″ blade, flood light and lots of finish sanding with 60 grit on a palm sander
2) Wash with TSP
3) Prime BOTH old texture and new DW with a DW primer as recommended by paint store (or from anyone who would care to recommend a specific primer that would work)
4) Texturize (using a new Wagner Power Tex Texture Sprayer and after practicing)over the new DW and selectively trying to blend in with the old texture.
5) Prime again
6) Latex paint
We’d appreciate any comments anyone might have to share. Our biggest concern is the wide variety of surfaces we have to deal with and how those might or might not show through on the finished wall.
My thanks in advance for any comments …
