HELP! In an article on HVLP conversion air (not a turbine), I’m trying to find out the necessary size for compressor. In article by Chris Minick (8/95 Issue #113), it appears that 2hp is adequate. Local paint companies have said you really need a 4-5 hp compressor to power the HVLP. Can someone with experience advise. Thanks.

You can usually figure a compressor's good for about 4cfm per horsepower. My HVLP conversion uses 20cfm and my 5 hp compressor works fine, but only just. It could not power the gun on continous use.
*When I first purchased an HPLV Conversion gun, I also purchased a 6.5 HP compressor to drive it. The combination worked adequately but was less effective than I had hoped for in terms of shooting latex paint and primer. Fortunately, I later found a great deal on a 4 stage turbine unit and never looked back. The turbine has enough guts to spray latex easily without thinning and can also be turned down enough to spray stain, lacquer, etc. I finally converted my conversion gun to a bleeder for my fine finish work and I use the gun that came with the turbine as my heavy duty workhorse. Good luck. John

John: I have been looking for a setup to spray latex semigloss on trim and doors. Sounds like yours works: what do you have, if you spray unthinned do you get a smooth finish?
