I spent two hours this weekend with a saw taking out 3 inches of concrete over the door in the basement of our new home. Everything came out neat except on one corner, where I hammered out a 5inch wide 2inch deep chunk of concrete. What is a good method to patch this?

I would probably use mortar. Is it overhead?
If so, I would:
1) Set a few tapcons in the void to provide some extra tooth.
2) Set a wood form across the top of the opening, and on one side as a dam(as needed).
3) Paint the patch area with bonding agent (optional), or wet it out with water from a spray bottle.
4) Using the driest mortar mix you can work with, pack it in tight.
If you are going to frame the doorway anyways, the 'form' could become the top of the doorframe.
Best of luck.
Thanks, I'll get on it this weekend.
