My wife changed her mind. Originally, she wanted to take up the carpeting in her study (130″x139″ plus a 30″x78″ bay) and put in hardwood. Now, she wants to put down tile, but she wants large tile. How large? Well, yesterday she was looking at 20″x20″.
Is there a rule of thumb for sizing tile for a room of a known dimension? Also, are the certain pro’s and con’s (aside from costs) to be aware of?

The more grout joints you have (small tile) the less chance you have of a tile(s) cracking. Just the opposite is true of less joints/large tile.
You had better make sure that your joist spacing/sizing/spans are up to snuff.
Big tile is a bear to install especially if you floor is not perfectly flat. It is easy to end up with "lippage" because of uneven substrate surfaces.
