Guys,
I’ve had a copper line fail in the slab in my Master Bath. Under the dadgum whirlpool tub. Crap. So I pulled the tub and got my excellent plumber out to take a look. His recommendation is to re-plumb the entire MB with pex. Good solution. This is the second copper failure I’ve had in a year and a half. The Master Bath addition was done about 15 years ago in this 30 year old ranch.
I’ve got pretty limited access to this part of the attic. Pex overhead won’t be a problem. I’m in extreme Southern Georgia. No problem at all with freezing. With limited access, and dropping pex to the tub and shower, an outside hose bib, two vanities separated by a door, and a supply line for the toilet, there will be a lot of time spent in the attic, crawling and boring holes. I hate to pay a plumber and helper to do the grunt work, so I’m going to do that part myself. I mean, that’s why we have 16 year old sons, right ?
My plumber is going to let me have a couple of hundred feet of pex, which I’ll fish though the walls and bring back to a central place for a mini-manifold. He’ll come in then and do all the couplings. He will do the rocket science part, I’ll do the dirty part.
My only question, for now anyway, is – do I anchor the pex to the framing as I would with romex ? I’m definitely going to fasten it near the hole in the top plate, but do I lay it wild, or run it neatly fastened every couple of feet. Or somewhere in between ? And for fasteners, I suspect there are two-pronged fasteners designed for pex, or can I use the romex deals I’ve got left over from my shop ?
Thanks !
Greg

You don't want to use a metal fastener on PEX bec it expands and contracts and can wear under a staple. There are black plastic clamps with a nail in one side commonly used for PEX, though i prefer the gray plastic ones that go all the way around the pipe and fasten with two nails or screws. Can you ask the plumber to leave some? If not, any place that sells PEX will have the clamps for the various sizes.
Will do, thanks very much !
