Would appreciate any recommendations as to brands of photovoltaic solar panels.Am planning to go solar in the fall. House is 3300 sq.ft. in Tucson, AZ. Spoke with a local retailer and the only question was what was my highest electric bill. They then said I’d need 30 panels to the tune of $30! Welcome all feedback… thanx.

From what I've been reading, going solar, at this time of world energy needs, is still a state of mind than saving money. Even with refunds from state or energy company, you can't expect to save money. In AZ, this may be different but you have to think long term if you are thinking of savings in the energy bill.
You may also have to think about reroofing your house, if the panels are going on roof. In recent FHB article, I think it said the life expectancy of solar cells are about 20 to 25 years. You can't put these panels on a roof that will not last at least that long, so there is that extra cost.
It may become a great value if you are selling your home so check with local realtors to see what kind of value this adds to your house. They may also be a great resource for materials, installers and as a reference. Check with your energy company for reference, if any. Better Business Bureau, local electricians union, and even town hall building department may be able to help.
Sorry that I can't be more specific, and I have next to nothing experience with solar cells, but I thought I can put in a bit of different perspective. Anyway, don't get intimidated by aggressive seller and ask whatever questions you want and be ready to walk away. Especially these day, buying solar energy is probably no different than buying a car. Hope this helps. By the way, check if there is a central organization of solar cell makers, such as they have for other building materials.
The fav right now for residential is SunPower solar panels they come in this all black sleek look that HO's are loving. For inverters I'm hearing good things about Xantrex's new lines.
Don't know what the rebate situation is in AZ but hopefully it will take a good chunk out of your cost. Here I get a $2.80 per watt rebate and that would help. What would help more is if the congress got off their butts and fixed the residential solar income tax credit. They should remove the cap then you will get 30% of the cost back in an income tax credit. That is going to be a substantial motivator for a lot of people.
