In the back of an issue of finehome building there was an article about using plastic pipe as a pier for construction . If anyone knows what issue it is in I would appreciate the information. If you could email the article would also be great as I have just moved and do not know which box I have packed them in. thanks for any help, Ed

There is a search function on the FineHomebuilding site where one can look for back issue articles.

I have tried that to no avail. Thanks Kemp
I believe that was not a full article but a part of a regular feature from an ask the pros/experts type column. The answer was given by Haywood Robertson, who was building just down the road from me at the time. The bigfoot system is one way, it is for a plastic base form that couples with a sonotube form

I believe you have found part of the answer. The bigfoot rings a bell but I am sure their was something about using plastic pipe for the shaft and how much stronger it was than the paper tubing. What you have given me has been a great help. Thank you, Kemp
The advantage of that second type with plastic is that it wioll not collapse in weet soil backfilled before pouring, and the frost will slide over the plastic easier and not grip it. It also has a slight cone shape instead of straight column so that also resists frost heave. I doubt it is stronger in any way from the sonsotube

In the back of an issue... any rough idea of a year there abouts?
Can you recall if it had any photos or line drawings in the article and if it was a single page article, or 2 to 3?

It was a I believe a half page article on the top part of the page. I think it was 2-3 years ago? Thank you for your help. Kemp
I think you mean using a plstic form for the pier, not a plastic pier. Bigfoot is one brand anme to search for.

The issue you are looking for is # 158. They're called plastic deck footings and they use schedule 40 pvc with a special base and cap. The mfg.web site is http://www.redifooting.com.
Thank you so much for the information as I was beginning to think i was crazy. Thanks again, Kemp
