I'm not an expert on the subject but I know two things:
Lamello is rated extremely high - in the "can't go wrong " catagory.
You can buy two or three PC's for one cheap Lamello.
*Don't buy the cheap PC. Junk.MD
*Mad Dog, That Lamello must be a hell of a tool. I bought a PC and I really like. I especially like 135' setting for outside mitered corners.
*read my post on knots
*thanks - jeez - opinions all over the place. what to do?
*buy the DW
*For as often as i use one the PC works for me.
*Get a Kreg pocket hole jig.
*Jake,I'm talking about the $129.95 PC, not the one that goes around $200. That is much better quality. The cheap one has a lot of slop in it, the fence is junky, adjustments are shakey and imprecise, the motor is wimpy. Even the switch is a pain. It's been 2 years since I had to use the thing, maybe they've improved. The DeWalt sure is solid in comparison though.
*i already have holes in my pockets.
*I have used both the Kreg jig and the PC. The jig is much faster and based on the reviews I have seen, every bit as strong as the bisquets.Dennis
*I've got a PC model 556 and don't like it at all. The PC model 557 is a Lamello look alike. I haven't used it, but I have used a Lamello and it worked great. Don't Know what you plan on using it for, but if it is for face framing cabinets, you can't go wrong with the Kreg pocket hole jig as Jim points out. I haven't pulled the Model 556 off the shelf in 5 years since buying the Kreg Jig. Anyone want a 556 for cheap?
*thanks everyone - i'm still checking in here every day for your advice.
*I have the Kregg Jig and love it for all types of work not just face frames. Also have the dewalt plate jointer. It is a great tool for the money. Use it weeklyDavid
*Yup. Love my Kreg jig, and IMO the Dewalt is the best joiner on the market, unless you want to step ut to Lamello (a big step). I've held (haven't used) the new P-C, and there was a lot of play in the fence, it was bigger and more awkward than the Dewalt, and I wouldn't ever have any use for those small biscuits. If I did, I'd probably pick up one of those cheap Ryobis.
*I too am a Kreg jig believer. On the rare occasion that I do need to install biscuits, I use my router with a 5/32" slotting cutter that has 3 different size bearings to accomodate whatever size biscuit you need to use.
*The DeWalt biscut jointer was cheap and works great.Ed. Williams
*thanks everyone
*So what did you buy?Ed.
*i have both the kreg jig and the new pc. if you plan on using the biscuit jointer for face frames and or attaching other thing that you can hide the pockets then i would go with the kreg jig. i use my biscuit jointer primarily for glueing up panels and cabinet doors and for other things where "neatness counts" good luck tough decision
*i can't believe it but i just ordered a lemello, my excuse was i'm gettin' old and i just want to use a nice tool. crazy, nuh?
*John, have you ever wondered how much that good quality tool actually has cost you? I mean by the time most people finally break down and get the best, if one were to add up the total costs of all the previous similar tools, just how much did the final one really cost? I'm just as guilty has the next guy.
*thanks. yep, that's what i've done a lot as i get older and you just can't help but enjoy your work a lot more with a quiet, smooth, solid tool. life goes by.
