so the plumber ran over my tablesaw – 7 yr old makita 8″, so I know you’re saying I should thank him, probably should. in fact, I think one of my partners may have paid him to do it…unfortunately, he didn’t finish the job, and the damn thing still kinda works, though it will never be the same pos it used to be…he said he’d make it right, but the question is, what can I fairly charge him…?

...enough to buy a new one....in HAWAII!
If it is the cool old one you could mount a router up to I'd charge him the replacement cost from eBay plus a tuneup at the dealer for one + a new blade.

whats his wife look like?

LOL to that
unfortunately she looks a lot like him...but I believe he was looking at the owners wife when he hit the saw...and kept on hittin it...
I would think $200 would be a good start. That will buy you a cheap unit or be a good start for a better one.
Dave
that's exactly what I paid for it 7 yrs ago - don't you think it's fair to figure in some depreciation?
You can't possibly charge him the replacement value, unless it was still in the mfgrs sealed box. If I was the driver, I would offer to pay half.

Nah !
He destroyed your saw. If you replace it it will cost you. Maybe you can't expect him to buy you a knew one so make him go around to the pawn shops and buy you a same condition Makita saw. He'll be out less money maybe but he'll use his gas to find you a replacement.
Believe you me I'd make it clear it better be same or better condition. The replacement cost will be what it will be.

Who left the table saw on the ground behind his truck?
Personally, I don't think I would ask for anything, but would probably accept whatever was offered within reason (no more than a $100 for that particular saw). I'd rather find out what kind of a man he really is by letting him make the first move.
itwas in front of his truck...hit it with his front wheel, flipped it , hit it with a dually, drove on...I was on the roof and only heard it happen, but was told he was looking elsewhere...but it is a tight spot...but I was leaning toward letting him make the offer - I told him what it cost , put the moral burden on him....
Plumbers do not suffer from moral delimas.
Just look at the holes they cut in floor joist. <g>
Dave
Pro-rate it. I'd make a guess at what percentage of life was in the saw just before he hit it and charge that percent of replacement cost.
Smile. It could be worse. You could be me working for you.
What would you expect you'd do if you ran over his old makita table saw?
be dead on or that quarter inch is going to haunt you
blame it on somebody else? actually, "what would I do" is my usual tactic in these moral dilemmas; but ever since I discovered the logical flaw in the Golden Rule, I've been totally at sea....
Ask the plumber what he considers is alright and let it go at that.be dead on or that quarter inch is going to haunt you
I feel your pain.
My 8" was destroyed but it was my fault. I went to replace it with the same, 'cause I like that saw.Guess what, they don't even make the 8 1/4" anymore I'm told. The 10" doesn't even sound the same besides costing around $500 +. So I bought a 10" portable fold-up Ryobi to use for about $200 while I decided on what to really get.
Funny thing is that Ryobi has worked out pretty good and it's got more features than I would have asked for but like very much. For a light weight field saw it ain't bad.I'm sticking with the Ryobi for now we'll see if it'll last as long as my Makita,10 years. But I'm thinking the accident was Karma helping me out.
Still make him pay for the full price of the Makita 10". Then go buy something else.

your post has given me the strenngth to admit it...I actually liked that saw...it was a little cranky and hard to use, but this is work, right? it built and trimmed many a house and deck, and stood up to the taunting of my co-workers, who still wouldn't bring one of their own...but I'll probably like a new one too...

Sentimental value,pain and sufferin'.....go shopping Uni-saws....
he's a plumber ,right? .........pocket change
regards
The best idea would be for him to repair or replace the unit with a comparable one, same approximate age, condition, etc. That way if he finds one for $50 that is as good as yours was, you won't know how little it cost him and won't feel cheated--but if it costs him 2 or 3 bills, he will know that's the going rate and that it's not you that ripped him by asking for that much. Much safer way to preserve a good relationship with your pipe mechanic....
As a gag, see if you can get him a set of those goofy spring wands people used to bolt onto their fender wells to locate the curb by sound when parking. You old enough to remember those??

Are you a GC or employee? If the plumber is working for you how about a barter for more work? You pay for a new saw and he knocks a reasonable time off his next estimate?
Otherwise, I would ask for 3/4 to full replacement cost, depending on if you were somewhat at fault.

If you weren't to blame at all and he's decent, why would he offer less than replacement cost?
Jon Blakemore
why would he offer less than replacement cost? Because it's 7 yrs old.Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it. T. Roosevelt
Charge him for a new top of the line saw...He IS a plumber and will just tack the cost onto his next job
I should have been more clear.
Why should he repay you any less than it would cost to purchas a similar quality 8" saw with about the same amount of wear.
That's why I posted the ebay link.

I don't know about this whole thread....maybe I'm a sucker though. It's pretty black and white to me. Anyone who subs for me, I consider myself fairly good friends with. I love to joke around and interact with the other trades onsite...relationships develop. This incident sounds like it happened around similar circumstances.
Anyway. I really believe that the guys that sub for me would immediately get out of the truck and offer some coin for the accident. What are we talking here....100 to 200 bucks TOPS? Isn't the sub/GC relationship worth a TON more than that? No matter which side of the relationship you're on? If I hit the saw, I'd feel like crap and pony up pronto. I suspect the guys who do work for me would do the same. If they didn't....that's they're loss...cuz I'm all done with you. And I'd have no problem telling them why.
One final note.... who leaves a tablesaw on the ground? Especially where vehicles are parked. I certainly wouldn't leave any tool I cared about anywhere near the bumper of a truck. My tools are either on the truck, in the trailer, or set up and being used. Period.
diesel
I'm with you on this, if I broke someone's tool I would be handing over some coin right now! I'm not going to wait until they come back to me with an invoice.
I also would expect the same in return, I think when someone asks for me to figure out what I need for the item and then never mentions it again is just trying to slide away from his obligation.
I don't chase someone down that owes me, its their job to find me and make it right.
Doug
we're talking rustic site here - dozer-road winding around steep hillside with six "luxury" cabins perched in various stages of development, generators, overwhelmed GC/Owner, disorganized, materials everywhere, did I mention steep? anyway, the road side was the table station, well off the road, and the guy was just not looking ...didn"t even know he'd done it...others went by with no problem, but ....
today he was AWOL and so was the saw...I know he has a brother who can" fix anything", so he may show up tuesday with franken-saw...kinda hope so...
I know it's all gonna be fine...
A franken-saw! Now that's good humor! I'LL give you the money for the that one.
I hope you get squared away with a saw you can use again. I used to have a Makita 8" like yours. It eventually got tired, but not runned over and I got the 10' Makita and Rousseau table. No, the 10" doesn't sound like the old 8" but it sure cuts wood good. I've had the "new" one for around 5 yrs. now and not a lick of trouble out of it. A really good portable saw, with the Rousseau table, which is excellent. I'm with DP, if I screwed your saw up, you sure wouldn't have to chase me around or even say a word to me about it. I'd just give you the money you needed to have a saw that worked for you. Fair is fair. I'd expect the same out of you if you ruined one of my tools. I HATE it when my employees hammer a tool of mine. Especially when they act ignorant about it, or deny doing it. I love getting new tools, but hate to spend money to repair them when I can't fix them myself. Good luck to you.
thanks for the link...I wasn't at fault, but I can usually find a way to feel guilty about anything...
He should buy you an equivalent used saw. Then he gets the damaged one to fix up or sell and recover part of his cost.
Or if you prefer, find some ads for used saws like that, and take the cash. That gives you the option to spend a little more and get a better saw. Again, the old one becomes his to try to recoup some money from.

Well, what was the outcome?
be dead on or that quarter inch is going to haunt you
I'd say he just bought a saw. Give him the old one, he buys a new one.
