I am considering installing Award hardwood flooring in my kitchen area. A contractor told me he saw an engineered floor that, after 5 years, came apart. The portions that had the problem were located around the refridgerator and the sink. He mentioned that the top ply had completely removed.
Does anyone have a similar experience?

When you leave a leaking reefer and a sink, damage will occur whether or not it's engineered. Even solid strip flooring would have buckled. Put down a beautiful thing and then forget to maintain it and its surroundings, and she no beautiful no more. The laminate floors want you to pay special attention in water prone areas or even don't use it. But seriously, any plywood underlay, eng. wood, lam. or solid hardwood floor needs to be dry to last. Let the water get down in it and you'll have a problem. That leaves concrete, and maybe tile over concrete as your only almost surefire, don't worry about it floor. Best of luck.
*Phil, Calvin is right on regarding moisture and wood flooring, whether solid or engineered. But I have another bit of input regarding Award flooring. I just recently finished building a new home in which I installed Award cherry flooring. I chose this floor because of their claims for their extra hard and super scratch resistant finish. I was very happy as I installed the floor because it went down easily and looked beautiful. In the three or four months that we've been in the house, however, the floor has been badly scratched by our golden retriever, something that did not occur in our old house with solid oak floors. I realize that cherry is quite a bit softer than oak, but expected better scratch resistance from the Award floor based on their promotional literature. Hope this helps, ted
