Pocket cutter–what’s the best?

| Posted in General Discussion on May 17, 2000 06:27am

I’m running a small 2-man shop and am looking for a pocket cutter. Locally, I can find only the Porter-Cable. Nothing against PC, but I would like a unit that my son can still use when I hand down the shop to him. Any input?

Thanks

Have you looked at any of the Kreg Tools? In my opinion there is none simpler and faster to use.

I especially like the very portable Kreg Rocket which is what I use the most. It works great for assembling 1-1/2" and wider face frames and the clamp that comes with the jig to hold it in place is also used to keep the face frame in alignment while assembling. All the Kreg pocket cutters have a lifetime warranty providing you don't use it with a carbide tipped drill bit.

*Thanks, Mad Dog--I agree. I've got the Kreg jig and am happy with it, but am looking for a production machine similar to the Porter Cable 552. I need to cut a LOT of pockets. Thanks, Phil

*The PC is not the answer to your problem, if it is the same unit I used several years ago. It had steps in the process the Kreg Jig eliminated, making the PC slower. I was at a tool show about a year ago and saw a machine that was truly for high production purposes. I wish I could recall the manufacturer, but the price was out of my league and was bigger than I needed. I do remember it automated all of the operations, except for feeding in the material. I also remember thinking how handy the kreg jig is for large frames, as you can take the tool to the work instead of the work to a stationary tool. The bottom line is there are production machines out there. Good Luck

*For production pocket holes I dont think you can beat "Castle". I operate a one man cabinet shop and use one on a regular basis. They make two different models, the one I use has two Porter Cable router motors and goes for around two grand, they also make a heaver duty model with pnuematic router motors, dont know the price offhand. It's a very well built machine, all you do to use it is position your workpiece and step on an air switch which clamps the peice down, then a 3/8" router bit swings up from under the table cutting the pocket then an 1/8" bit comes thru the fence drilling a clearance hole thru the end of the rail to meet the pocket. All this in about two seconds. One of many places the castle machines are available is "Louis and Company"Chuckps, Kreg also makes an automated machine for around $1500-$1600.

*I use a PC 552. It's a vast improvement over their smaller version of a pocket cutter. The only complaint I have is that you are limited to pocket holes in material less than 7/8" in thickness. A plus for the 552 is that it's portable.
