I have the need to have a passage way between my foyer and the family room. There is not enough room to have a door between these rooms. I would like to use a pocket window between these two rooms. I visualize this “window” to be 30″ high and 18″ wide and be 42″ off the floor. The “window” would be stained glass that looks nice from both rooms. When the window was “shut” it would not look like an operable window, but like a nice stained glass picture. When opened, it would allow me to pass food and drinks into the family room. Is something like this “do-able”? Has anyone ever done one? Any insights? My contractor tells me to leave it out and live with some inconvenience. Should I listen to him?

Lose the stained glass. Cut the hole and duct tape some plastic to the hole on each side. Whenever anyone makes remarks about it, just tell them the work is in progress.
*Yes, it's doable. Your contractor doesn't want to do it because it's outside his experience or expertise. It would be all custom design and work and would be expensive. My friend who does stained-glass charges $200/ft² and up depending on the design. That works out to at least $750 in your case.
*Sure you can do it. Have him head off the opening if necessary. Old garage windows have slid to the side. Wood to wood like an old drawer. Lube the track with Door-Ease (wax like substance in a cigar sorta tube at auto parts stores). Do the jambs like a pocket door for removal of sash later. Grooved track top and bottom. Best of luck.
*Aluminum tracks are even available for building sliding cabinet doors. These could be used with the rollers for a really nice (and pricy) sliding window.
