In the garage I have a fold down attic stairs. It was roughed out when the house was built in 79. 2 or 3 years latter I installed the stairs.
Around the opening it is trimed with 4 1×3 cedar boards. I think that those where orginal.
I pulled down the stairs and one of the side piece fell off.
So I went to put it back in place. Going to use the existing nails to position it and then drive some new longer ones.
Now there are 4 possible ways that this could have been installed. It is trapped between the two end piece so that limits the positioning.
But I figure that it could have been points up or points down and flipped for or aft.
Use my great intelligence and powers of observation I quickly ruled out the pointy ends down.
So that left 2 other poistion.
Now there where about 8 nails in it, but about 1/2 of them where short brads that the just went through the trim, but should have still made a mark in the DW.
And there where several holes in the DW.
But no matter what I did I could only get one existing nail to match up to a nail hole.
Maybe the point ends where suppose to be down!

That reminds me of a "three stooges" episode. They are being carpenters and Curly is working in a doorway. He is looking at the nails as he takes them out of his apron and is throwing some of them away. Moe says " what the heck are you doing" Curly replies " some of these nails are backwards" Moe says "you idiot, those are for the other side of the doorway"
That was Laurel and Hardy, IIRC.
