The engineer on my porch plans is MIA. In the meantime, thought I’d ask here.
- The required footings in my county are 2’x2’x12″high at 30″ depth. The drawing shows the 2’x2′ footing going up to the ground level. Did he show this for simplicity or other (strength) reasons? For aesthetic reasons I’d like a 14″ sonotube going from the footing to the ground level. Since the deck post will be 6″x6″ I can’t think of what would be wrong with a sonotube since the 14″ sonotube will have greater compression strength than the 6×6.
- Part of my deck extends only 7′ from the house. The current plan shows a footing/post under this corner. Is it possible to change it so the footing moves to the left so I then have the side of the deck cantilever a foot or two? I attached a quick sketch….
Thanks
Kevin

As long as the footing is the required size below the frost line, there shouldn't be any problem with putting a sonotube on top of it. That is quite a waste of concrete to make 2 x 2 all the way to the top. If you are supporting a roof above the deck you would want the foundation to line up with the post not offset. With that said if you had a engineer design the project I would be careful about deviating from it without his consent.
