prefiinished side wall shingles
I am going to be replacing the side wall shingles on my house. The originals were installed 7 years ago. The paint, not stain, is peeling on many of them. Some are high enough off the ground, 25+ feet, that scafolding would be needed to clean, remove or reinstall new shingles. I want to repalce them with prefinished shingles or with a Hardi type. I don’t want to be refinishing the shingles every 3-4 years. Can anyone give me info regarding the best prefinished cedar shingles or those of the Hardi manufactured type? I live in the northwest and am really looking for the more natural look rather than solid paint.
Thanks,
Terry

On the house I contracted for in 1999 I used Hardie Shingle, and I'm pleased with it. Applying stain as you would to cedar will not produce the same effect. But you can do a lot with color to make it pleasing even though it will still look like paint. My plan was to do a base coat in green then do a hand applied glaze in some type of brown to mimic the weathered look. The Greene and Greene bungalow homes in Pasadena was the look I was after. There was so much else to do that I never got around to experimenting with the second color. But I'm happy with the look and exceptional durability of the Hardie Shingle.
There have been other threads here with photos of painting techniques that make Hardie look stained. Some looked good in the photos. Try searching the archives.
Here's a picture of the house that I used the Hardie on.

If you are gona go to the trouble of tearing off the old shingles and replacing them with new then I would recommend two things.
1. Get the shingles double dipped from a factory.
2. Use a rain screen like home slicker so the shingles can 'breath'.
