I’m building a garage on what was previously 4-5 inches of builders sand that was previously on the site. Can I use a vibratory compactor to prepare for slab on grade foundation?

Typically slabs have several inches of uncompacted sand under them. In your. case I'd rake back the sand and put down 6 mil poly then respread the sand and tamp it by hand. you can do this in. sections so that you don't have to move all the sand at once.
