I have seen earlier discussions about using epoxy mixtures (such as what Abatron sells) to repair holes, etc. in exterior wood. In critical locations would it make sense to put an epoxy seal coat on the end grain of a timber which will be exposed? The fascia boards on my house are 2×8 and at the corner of the roof, the joint has, of course, one end exposed and they are beginning to split.

You are correct in wishing to seal the end grain. Epoxy will work fine as long as the paint will stick. Wood does absorb more moisture along the end grains, and you will certainly slow deterioration by doing this.
The other problem is that you say the 2x is splitting which tells me that you have a piece of lumber that contains the core of the tree...you will not be able to control the splitting, without replacing with Quarter sawn stock.
