We have a two-year-old unstained cedar deck. We’ve been using Thompson’s Waterproofing on it and it now needs cleaning already (we have some shade under trees and so some mildew). Should we keep using Thompson’s or is there a better way to go?

There is definitely better ways to go!
Thompsons is basiclally a thined down wax product that oxidizes and is gone in about six months of the solar UV rays. I don't know if it has mildewcides or not. Almost any deck finish product is better. I have used Cabot's, Penofin, Behr's and a few others. I am partial to the penofin.
There was just another thread titled something along the lines of, "So you don't like Thompsons..."

I have used Cabots pretty successfully. Stuff isnt cheap though.
A buddy uses butchers wax thinned down with turpentine. He thins it down just enough to be able to rub it on with a mop. Mops it on and wipes up any excess the next day. It lasts him 2-3 years before doing again and when he re-does it he swears the water is still beading up/
I plan on trying it next time I have some cedar to seal.
+1 for Cabot's oil based solid stain. For what it is worth Consumer Report's currently rates it #1 in their tests.I have also had good results with Behr Deck + stain. A little cheaper than Cabot's and easier to find by me. HD carries Behr and they run deals once and awhile. Especially on the 5 gallon pails. Both of these stains last more than 2 years and look great. That is with 3 kids and two crazed Labs beating on the deck.
I get the Cabots at MAB paints. I have an account there.
I have not used the Behr.
I can tell you that the Cabots Australian Timber Oil doesnt hold up well in the local sun but people tell me it is the best product to use on Ipe and Massaranduba
I might start trying other stuff and sampling a little.
