Hi all, I am going to be building my own house in the near future and have a question about windows. My exterior walls are going to be 2×6 and will have 5/8 sheathing followed up by 1 1/2″ rigid insulation on the exterior. I am going to use 2x8s to create a window box and will protrude 2″ past the studs to accommodate for the sheathing and insulation. Is this ok to do and will the 1 1/2″ width around the frame be enough to accommodate new build window fins and fasteners? Sorry if my lingo isn’t correct…hopefully you understand what I am asking.
Thanks,
Chad

Hi Chad - Yeah, that will work. 1.5" (which is the actual thickness of your lumber) is pretty standard for a window buck. Think about it... If you didn't have the buck extension, the rough opening behind the sheathing would have the same thickness; it's not like you're attaching the window to the king stud. Some people even use 3/4" ply for the buck, but obviously there's less room for error. Good luck with the house!
Yeah that makes total sense. Thanks for your reply...it's greatly appreciated.
