I would like to build a pull down stair case that is capable of supporting considerable weight. I would like the stairs to have a single run and not fold. The stairs will lead to overhead storage in my workshop and therefore the ceiling opening has to be large enough to get plywood sheets in easily. I have framed out the opening to be roughly 3’X 10′. the ceiling height is 8′ . I realize that I might need a small step at the bottom to shorten the run of the staircase and get enough rise. Any help in counter balancing or suggesting materials that would be light, strong and cost effective would be greatly appreciated.
