Hi all,
24×36 2-story gambrel garage. Finally getting rafters in place after almost a year and a half of puttering around. Lower rafters are on, plan on getting the uppers in place and hopefully some covering over that before we head to Hawaii in a couple weeks for our delayed honeymoon.
Anyway, how fussy do I need to be about the top of the rafters all being in one plane?
Full 2×6 – rough hemlock – on 16″ centers. 5/8 ply going on top. Most rafters were pretty straight- a lot of them I couldn’t decide which way they were crowned (that surprised me). I made all the cuts based on the top surface, so width variation wasn’t really an issue.
When I placed them, I used a 10′ straightedge to line up the top & bottom, shimming on the very few which needed it. So, most of the variation is due to crowning variations. I haven’t seen anything that looks like more than 3/16″ out of plane.
I’m assuming that areas which stick up are worse than those which dip down. I’ll take a power plane or belt sander to any of the high spots I need to, and can shim up low spots if necessary.
I wouldn’t worry at all, except that one side lines up with the driveway, so when I pull in, or anyone passing by, will be looking straight along the edge. Planning on using architectural shingles (if I don’t choke on the price).
Of course as I’m typing this I’m thinking more and more that I’m way overthinking this . . .

That was my take. Of course that's the way I build, which is why I got out of the business - I'm way to slow to make any money - LOL.
I don't think I'd make any money at it either, if I can't get a garage finished in over a year.

My Tacoma is out of the picture on the left, the car in the middle is my parents', which will be gone tomorrow after I pick them up at the airport, and the new RAV4 on the right at least is the 6 cylinder, 269HP version, which replaces the minivan:)
I deleted the too-big photo -- I had shrunk the file size, but didn't think to shrink the display size.
It wouldn't let me paste in the smaller version after I deleted the original.
Thanks for the comments. I was hoping someone with some experience would jump in with their thoughts on what's acceptable.
Our house has some noticeable waviness in the roof, which I think is more due to sagging plywood than problems with the rafters. The previous owners had the roof reshingled about 6 years ago, but were told the roof was sound (which it is), so they didn't bother replacing the wavy ply. I just want MY work to look halfway decent.

Much as I like the idea of buying American cars, I've had too much luck with the Toyotas. My '90 pickup got me 10 years and 200K miles with almost no problems (if you ignore the $5K in repairs when I hit the deer in Montana), and my '01 Tacoma (doublecab - I love the extra seating space) has 6 years and 110K miles, still going strong.
So, when the 9-year-old Chrysler started costing more than it was worth to keep running, we went for the RAV4. Another factor was wanting something that she'd be comfortable driving on snow & ice with, so I wouldn't have to get up a couple hours early to drive her in to work on nasty mornings.
If the AWD, traction control, and stability control stuff works as advertised, she shouldn't have any problems.

Dude, you're totally screwed. Tear it down and get it right this time!
Just kidding.
Go to sleep and forget about it.

Nice picture.
Now, if you'll shrink the picture so I can see all of the text on one screen, I'll be able to read what you said.
