I need some ideas for a kitchen floor that is cheap, low maintenance, really tough, and kid friendly. Our 5 1/2 year old sheet vinyl floor is looking very worn due to constant use by my wife and 8 children. I know nothing is perfect but would like your ideas. Below are some of the things we are considering and the problems we see with them.
Ceramic Tile: Besides being a glass shattering experience, I skimped on the floor system to save money and think it flexes too much for tile.
Sheet vinyl: Is there one tough enough?
Vinyl tile: Do they make one with the color all the way through that is ‘no wax’?
Laminate: They say the stuff is indestructable. I look at my kitchen counter top, no one walks up there ( alright, not very often) and it sure shows wear. How good is it for the price?
Thanks for any help

VCT--Vinyl Composition Tile. It's the stuff they put in classrooms and supermarkets. It comes in lots of cool colors now, it's simple to install and it's only a buck a foot, the color goes clear through, and i've got eight critters with twice as many paws on the floor who haven't managed to wreck it. Even my renters can't seen to destroy theirs.
*Rubber tile. It's used in commercial kitchens and other places. I had it for 20 years and it still looks like new. No discernable wear.
*Jim,Do you know of a source for Rubber tile?
*Tim - This should be on your list. It's probably not quite as cheap as you hoped, but it fits every other aspect.
*>Do you know of a source for Rubber tile? http://www.tilebiz.com/rubber-tile-floors.htm gives a lot of links. Else search Google with "rubber floor tile".
*Any flooring store should be able to order it. Last year when i checked, it was $5/sq. ft. for the studded type tiles.
*How 'bout cork? About the same $$ as wood, durable, flexible, naturally antibacterial, looks better when the kids try to stain it, and sustainable.
*Tim,What about real linolium? A neighbor put one. It looks nice and wears very well. I don't know about cost.
