Okay, so I have some granite pieces I got from a countertop fabricator. I want to use them for a walkway in my garden. 3/4″ polished rock. Two questions: 1) How can I un-polish them for better traction and 2) What kind of foundation would be best underneath?

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Stone workers use a wetting and torch method. Looks easy on TV but I don't know how much skill it really takes or what the technique is.
IIRC it's called flaming. It's usually done with boulder though.
I've seen ads for flame finished granite tiles and stair treads.
sandblaster will rough them up, by the way i have a few pcs you can have from when my 6'x8' slab fell apart while making countertops! larry
hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
I recommend road base and rock dust instead of sand.
under the sand..

The other side would be unpolished, don't know if that's the roughness you want though.
What size are they? 3/4 may be too thin for a garden walk.
Freeze thaw a lot? Set them in 3/4 crush and screening.
The beauty of the granite is from the polishing. Honing is the way to maintain the look and gain a little grip when wet. I would suggest you make the pieces small enough to make the grout line the griping area. Arrange the pieces so when you walk you tread on a grout line. Set on crushed stone and grout in between.
