I’ve got a single story house with a basement. The main floor is supported down the center by a 3×7 inch steel I-beam which sits atop 3″ steel columns on 8 foot centers. I’d like to remove one of the columns to make room for a pool table and I’d prefer not to have the floor cave in.
I’m thinking of sistering a second 16 foot I beam between the remaining columns or perhaps just reinforcing the vertical web of the existing beam by welding a 1/4″ x 6″ plate along that span.
Is this do-able or should I just buy a smaller pool table?

Thanks, I will. Fortunatly I'm much better with a hammer than a computer!
I think you need to hire an engineer. He might suggest you add 2 new I-beams. One on either side of the existing beam. Without an engineer actually looking at it you would be foolhardy to do anything.
