As part of my kitchen renovation I would like to remove the paint from a beautiful masonry fireplace. I tried Bix (sp?) to no avail and I don’t want to screw it up. How do I remove paint from masonry?

Dear J. Fish,
Really? Bix had no effect? Are you laying it on heavy enough? Or are you using the spray bottle they sometimes give you w/ it?
Ditch the spray bottle, lay it on heavy w/ a 4" throw-away brush - be sure and just lay it on in one direction - do NOT work it back and forth.
Let it do its thing - then scrape it off w/ a plastic spatula or other plastic, flexible putty knife. You can buy those flexy plastic Bondo spreaders real cheap where ever they sell Bondo - those things work wonders for a whole lot of applications.
Is it brick or stone? Because after paint-remover does all it can do w/o driving yourself nuts, I'd think a light sand-blast (if you got good mortar joints) would do the trick as a final step in finishing the job. And you can always re-point the thing if some of the mortar comes loose from the chemical or mechanical processes of paint removal. At least in theory (S).
yours,
Geo. Lentulo
*check with a good masonry supply for graffiti remover. Yours is a much bigger job, but it might work for you. Best of luck.
*Just in case....When George says "Let it do its thing" he meansb waitfor the amount of time the instructions on the can say to wait. Don't get impatient.Rich Beckman
*Sandblasting always seems to work for me.
