My 20 year old brick 2-story has aluminun windows with single pane glass (near Houston Texas). I want to replace them with energy efficient windows (double or triple pane). My $500 / month summer electric bills are bleeding me dry!
Questions: The old windows have rails nailed to the outside of the 2×4 studs behind the bricks. How do you remove the old windows?
I want double hung windows with frames that can pivot out for easy cleaning. I prefer aluminum clad wood. Not particularly fond of Vinyl. What is a good brand and where can I order them? ANY HELP APPRECIATED! ([email protected]) AKA – PlaneWood by Mike in Katy.
Here are some pics of existing windows:

Marvin. They'll make the custom size for an upcharge. I think it is around $125.
As far as getting the old ones out, it can be done. A sawzall is your friend here. It's going to be hard because its alum not wood but...
Cut as much away as you can and pry the nailing flange loose a little bit. Get the saw blade between the flange and the sheathing and cut tha nails.
Remove the sashes, use a sawzall to cut the frame in several places and use a pair of Vice grips to grab that frame and pull it out of place. It's aluminum so it will be easy to pull the nails thru the flange.
