I am trying to measure for replacement windows in a wood frame wall of the house. So, I believe the replacement windows have a nailing flange. I have taken apart the inside trim and measured the existing windows from the inside, but cannot get to the outside becaue it is on the second story of the house and also has trim boards covering the actual edges of the window anyway. Can someone tell me if the “tip-to-tip” measurement is different from the interior measurement and the exterior measurement? From what I can tell this window is about 1/2 inch bigger if I were to measure it from the outside of the house, instead of measuring it from the inside of the house. Thank you so much for any help. I really appreciate it.

The best source of the info you need would be the stocking dealer or the retailer you will purchase them from.
Antone elses directive is basically a guess.
.....well so and so told me to measure them this way..........

If you have measured from jamb to jamb (side to side) and from the sill to the head (bottom to top) you have the frame size of the window. I have never come across a window that had a frame size that differed from interior to exterior. You also want to measure the jamb size or thickness of the window. Add the lumber dimension (2X4, 2X6 etc,) that your house was built with to the interior wall covering and the exterior covering (generally plywood plus the homes exterior as in clapboards, stucco etc.) If your retrofitting and don't want to pay for ####custom fit you also want to measure the rough opening, which is the width and height between the framing members that surround the window.
Not sure how your home was built or what vintage, but I usually do not get nailing fins on the window unit for a remodel.
Also if your buying from a reputable dealer than have him/her measure the windows if there is any doubt!

Is the 1/2" difference in the Hgt? This could be due to the slope of the sill. I agree with the third posting, call your dealer/supplier and have them tell you (if they will not come out and measure) how to measure for their product, also I question the flange on a replacement window. This must be an add on to allow a buyer to use the unit for new construction.
Good luck!
